Musical Typography

a composition in letters

Language and music share a common origin. Both are systems of sound, rhythm, pattern, and expression. Yet somewhere between the printing press and the personal computer, the keyboard became solely a tool for writing. Its musical nature was forgotten.

Musical Typography seeks to recover that lost dimension.

The installation invites visitors to type freely and instinctively. As one enters letters, words, or phrases through a custom interactive podium, each character is translated into a unique musical frequency and generates a corresponding visual form in real time. Every keystroke becomes both a note and a mark, producing evolving compositions of sound, motion, and typography.

The work blurs the boundaries between reading, writing, listening, and composing. Visitors are not instructed to create music, yet music emerges from their actions. In doing so, the installation reframes typing as a creative and performative act.

At its core, the piece poses a quiet question:

What if you had been making music all along, and simply never heard it?

What if typing was a form of composition?
